KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Halle Pratt of the Calgary Aquabelles kicked off her last appearance at the 2014 Canadian Espoir Championships in synchronized swimming on Wednesday by ranking first in the all-important figures standings in the 13-15 age group.
Pratt topped the almost 200-entry field with 72.1250 points. Emily Armstrong of the Variety Village Synchro Club in Toronto ranked second at 70.8780 and Paige Hopper of the Aquabelles third at 70.0570.
The top-25 in the 13-15 figures event advanced to Phase 2, a second figures event scheduled for Friday. The top-20 athletes from Phase 2 will meet again on Sunday for Phases 3 and 4 when a 12-member training squad will be selected. From that group the 10-member squad for the 2014 Mediterranean Cup set for September in Greece will be finalized.
In the 13-15 duet preliminaries, Armstrong and Teghyn Gurney of Variety Village are first at 72.6333, Charlotte Maheu-Savard and Rafaelle Valiquette of Montreal Synchro second at 72.600 and Sabrina Barnes and Meaghan Ozikizler of Granite Synchro in Toronto third at 71.9333.
The competition is hosted by the Kamloops Sunrays and Synchro B.C. under the leadership of Synchro Canada. A total of 273 athletes from 23 clubs across Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan) are competing.
Competition continues through to Saturday at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.
