Annual Sport Partner Information Meeting invitation

Dear Talisman Centre Sport Partner,

It is a pleasure to send you this invitation on behalf of my team at Talisman Centre.  My name is Cari Din, I am the current Sport Director.  I was a synchronized swim coach and athlete who grew up in TC.  Along with my teammates, I won an Olympic medal in 1996 .  I am a Master Coach Developer in the National Coach Certification Program for Canada and a Leadership Professor at the U of C.  I am leading the Sport Portfolio here at TC four days per week.

We are scheduling two information meetings this fall, one later in the evening and one in the afternoon, in order to give you an option for attendance – that being said, attendance is not optional.

We make this one meeting mandatory because we will go over critical changes in the way we partner with you and deliver services that support your sport training and our dual mandate.   I am extremely proud of our ability to balance this mandate and bring the Canadian Sport for Life and LTAD 2.0 pathway to life in our unique facility each day.

Please accept this email as a formal invitation to attend ONE of our scheduled meetings.  We will be asking partners who do not attend one of the meetings to pay a fee for what will be a free educational session to attendees.

Please join us for an engaging meeting either
·         Tuesday, September 6, 2:00pm – 4:00pm  OR
·         Wednesday, September 7, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Dive Calgary's Caeli McKay Selected by Diving Plongeon Canada for Training Opportunity in Montreal

Caeli McKay, who has been training at Talisman Centre since the age of 5, is relocating to Montreal for the next three months.  This will provide her with an exceptional experience to train alongside Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito out of the National Training Centre and travel with the Senior team as they prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.

As a current member of the Senior National Team training,  Caeli has been training under the coaching guidance of Charlie Tu while she finishes grade 11.  This is an amazing accomplishment for Caeli to be selected by Diving Plongeon Canada to train in Montreal alongside Canada’s best divers and Rio Olympians.

Please join Talisman Centre in wishing her well as she continues to progress along the podium pathway.

Canada's Sr. Men's National Water Polo Team

Let’s Celebrate & Support Canada’s Sr. Men’s National Water Polo Team as they compete in Italy for a change to represent Canada at the Olympic Games in Rio!

As the home to the National Training Centre for Canada’s Sr. Men’s National Water Polo Team, Talisman Centre is excited to help support the team as they gear up for a major international competition in Italy from April 3-10, 2016.  This event is the Olympic Qualifier where they will compete against other international teams, mostly European teams to obtain 1 of 3 remaining positions at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

April 2016

To support the training needs of the National Team this will be a greater team effort from March 2- 17, 2016, before they depart for a training camp in Greece.  For part of this time, their new Head Coach, Giuseppe Porzio “Pino”, will also be on-site with the team for the first time since joining Water Polo Canada earlier this year.

About Pino from Water Polo Canada – “Either as a player or as coach, Giuseppe Porzio has an undeniable and enviable track record, having earned over forty titles at major water polo events since the 1980’s. His long list of accomplishments includes an Olympic gold medal (Barcelona 1992) and numerous podium results at World Cup, European Championships, FINA World Championships, Mediterranean Games, Champions League, European Super Cup, Adriatic League and Italian Championships”.

To support the men’s team our programs and public are altering their regular spaces to allow the National Team to practice at the regulated FINA International pool set up of 8 lanes at 30m.  Training at anything other than 30m leading up to a major competition can cause athletes to not be as effective at their desired outcomes during the competition.  As a result:
·         On Wednesday March 2, 9, 16 Talisman Centre programs will be running at 17m during these evenings;
·         Public will maintain 100m of pool space in the format of reduced lane length in the Dive Tank for 1 hour.

We thank everyone for their support over the 2.5 week period as the guys train hard to take on the world in Italy.

Caeli McKay - Fifth in the 3m Springboard Final at the FINA Diving Grand Prix

CALGARY'S CAELI MCKAY A PROMISING FIFTH AGAINST EXPERIENCED

MADRID  GRAND PRIX FIELD IN HER FIRST SENIOR INTERNATIONAL FINAL

Four young Canadian divers getting valuable international exposure this weekend

Madrid, January 15, 2016 – Canada's Caeli McKay (Calgary, AB), by far the youngest woman in the 3m springboard final at the FINA Diving Grand Prix on Friday, placed fifth in her first senior international final on Friday.

The 16-year-old, who was the junior of each of the other five finalists by at least a half-decade, totalled 278.10 points. McKay, who trains under the tutelage of coach Charlie Tu at Dive Calgary, had an eighth-place finish in 3m at Madrid last season.

Competing on the senior level is a big stepping stone for McKay, who earned a silver medal in 3m to combine with Molly Carlson (Thunder Bay, ON) for a 1-2 finish in October at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Matanzas, Cuba in October.

We are impressed to see that Caeli remained solid through all three rounds today,” said Mitch Geller, Chief Technical Officer, Diving Plongeon Canada. “The pressure of competing in her first senior international final obviously didn’t faze her.

McKay's showing in the final built off a respectable showing in the semi-final, where she tallied 269.80 points to qualify. She earned 270.9 points during the preliminary round.

“She didn’t really miss a single dive and we know for her to compete on a higher level, it is just a matter of improving her precision, and her entries,” Geller added.

“We have always known that she is really tough competitor and her performance today validates our impression of her.”

Zhihuan Xu of China won the gold on her final dive, totalling 338.25 points to surmount compatriot Han Wang, who earned the silver medal with 336.60. Uschi Freitag of Holland earned the bronze with 320.00 and her teammate Inge Jansen was fourth with 301.80.

Eighteen-year-old Ethan Pitman (Edmonton, AB) reached the semi-final in men's 10m platform, finishing seventh with 289.05 points. Pitman was in contention to make the final until his second-last dive, a back 3½ somersault where he scored 24.75, went poorly. The back 3½ was his strongest dive in the morning preliminaries, where Pitman scored 69.30 points out of his total of 367.70 over six dives.

Canada has two more Junior Elite National Team members competing in Madrid on Saturday. Peter Thach-Mai (Montreal, QC) will make his Grand Prix debut in men's 3m. Olivia Chamandy (Montreal, QC) is competing in women's 10m where the promising 15-year-old will be looking for her first career top-10 placing. Chamandy placed 11th in 10m at the Bolzano Grand Prix in July.
