Calgary Aquabelles win combo gold at Canadian Open

SASKATOON – The Calgary Aquabelles won the gold medal in the combo event on Friday at the Canadian Open Synchronized Swimming Championships.

The Aquabelles accumulated 83.4000 points for the victory in the combo open event with Toronto’s Granite Synchro second at 80.6000 and Montreal Synchro third at 79.5667.

‘’As a group we really wanted to focus on having accurate positions and patterns and wow highlights,’’ said Maxime McLean of the Aquabelles. ‘’We all really wanted to have fun in our final combo swim together and get into character and get the crowd into it. For our last swim we wanted to leave it all in the pool and have everyone remember our swim.’’

In the team technical event, Team Canada placed first in the international standings with 81.7133 and Australia was second at 69.2935. Synchro Elite from Quebec City took the national open crown with a 68.649 score.

Canada’s Senior National Team is in action here after a return to the event last year in Quebec City and is entered in the solo, duet and team technical and free event as it gears up for the 2014 World Cup in Quebec City, the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, and, ultimately, the 2016 Olympic Games.

In junior team technical preliminaries, Granite Synchro holds a slim lead over the Aquabelles with 77.4816 to 77.0234. Montreal Synchro is third at 74.5461. The final is on Saturday, the last day of competition.
