Vancouver, BC – Field Hockey Canada and the Canadian Women’s National Field Hockey Program have selected 21 athletes to travel to New Zealand in January for a tour, which will include a training camp and test matches.
The touring Women’s National Team consists of two goalkeepers, seven defenders, seven midfielders, and five forwards. The roster comprises of members from the 2015 Women’s National Team and Senior Development Squad, which were both named earlier in December.
Five athletes – Alex Thicke (North Vancouver, BC), Beckett Frisch (Calgary, AB), Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, BC), Rosie Beale (Victoria, BC), and Steph Snyder (Waterloo, ON) – will likely make their first international appearances for Canada in the test matches versus New Zealand.
The trip to New Zealand will be the Women’s National Team’s first major activity of 2015 and will serve as key preparation for World League 2, which takes place in March and is step towards 2016 Olympic qualification.
The New Zealand training camp will take place from January 19-30th. The camp will be followed by three friendly matches, and three official test matches against the New Zealand National Team, which is ranked fourth in the world.

The Race to Nowhere in Youth Sports

With great power comes great responsibility - "You are the gatekeepers of youth sports, the people who play God, and decide who gets in, and who is kicked to the curb."

A great piece, and a great explanation of what "10 000 hours" actually means. A must-read for parents and coaches!

Brooklyn Snodgrass of Cascade Grabs Gold

Canadians win gold at U.S. short course nationals

Swimming Canada - GREENSBORO, N.C. – Richard Funk of Edmonton and Brooklyn Snodgrass of Calgary each won a gold medal on Friday night at the U.S. Nationals short course swimming championships.
In the men’s 100 yards breaststroke, Funk was seeded fourth heading into the event final but took nearly a second off of his time from the morning (53.12) to place atop the podium in 52.36. He won out of lane six, defeating Portuguese Olympian and record-holder Carlos Almeida by less than two tenths-of-a-second. Funk came very close to reaching the NCAA 'A' standard (52.29).
In the women’s 100 yard backstroke, Snodgrass led wire-to-wire in putting up her winning time of 51.59. That is an NCAA automatic qualifying time for the 2014 NCAA Champion in the 200 backstroke.  Snodgrass won the bronze medal in the 50-m backstroke at the Commonwealth Games.
Kennedy Goss of Toronto, also racing for Indiana, notched her second individual medal of the competition finishing second in the 200 yard freestyle.  Goss' time of 1:44.87 was a season best.  She was also third Thursday in the 500-yard freestyle.

TC's High Performance Dietitian Kelly Drager Educates the Experts

margin: 10px;

Many of the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary’s (CSIC) specialists have had the privilege of being recognized as national leaders within their respective fields. This list includes Registered Dietitian Kelly Drager, who recently spent time in Montreal sharing her research findings with other sports experts from around the country.
Drager presented in Montreal after being asked by Own the Podium to facilitate two different sessions at the Montreal Sport Innovation (SPIN) Summit 2014. The Montreal symposium was the 9th annual conference put on by Own the Podium, whose conferences have the goal of “developing and networking in the areas of applied sport science, sport medicine, and sport innovation.”
Drager was enthusiastic about the opportunity to share her knowledge at the conference, believing that “SPIN is a great opportunity to connect in person with colleagues and other sport science disciplines. The collaborative candid conversations are often what initiates the creative thinking process, leading to future projects that will further the development of athletes to the highest level possible.”
One of the topics that Drager shared her knowledge about was the concept of Relative Energy Deficiency for Sport (RED-S). RED-S is a syndrome that refers to impaired physiological function including metabolic rate, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular health. Along with the interdisciplinary panel of fellow specialists Shaunna Taylor, Trent Stellingwerff, and Adrienne Leslie-Toogood, Drager presented on RED-S and its implications for all coaches and Integrated Support Team members (IST). The group also introduced implications and strategies for paramedical staff, sport scientists, coaches and sport leaders who are looking to improve performance while maintaining athlete health.
The second facilitation Drager was asked to lead was titled Weight Management Consideration for Athletes. Drager’s main goal for the session was to facilitate discussion for determining appropriate weight and body composition for athletes. This is a key consideration for IST members, as often managing weight is necessary for performance and body composition demands are extremely sport specific. Drager addressed issues such as how weight and body composition targets are determined for athletes, key components that should be considered when assessing if an athlete is at an appropriate weight, and what the best approaches to achieve desired changes for an athlete are.
Drager’s work at the CSIC has provided her with the incredible opportunity to further her professional development while working with teams such as the National Wrestling Team and Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada. At the SPIN conference, she was able to share knowledge gained through her work with CSIC teams during one of her workshops by presenting a case study on the consequences of health and performance which reviewed current evidence based approaches to effectively facilitate fat loss while maintaining or gaining lean tissue in the athletic population. The combination of being able to elevate athletes’ performances while also making progress within the ever-evolving field of nutrition is a benefit that Drager knows is enabled by the leaders of the CSIC who are always striving to be a step ahead of the international competition.
Drager recognizes that the environment created at the CSIC has helped her, along with other IST members, stay ahead of the curve when it comes to research. She acknowledges that, “At CSIC we have the ability to directly interact with the athletes on a daily basis as well as the other sport science members of the IST. Seeing the athletes train maximally everyday is motivating, creates a sense of national pride and definitely encourages everyone working within the team to do the best to foster excellence.”

Newly certified clubs recognize tangible benefits from Club Excellence

November 14, 2014
Club Excellence Program - OTTAWA, Ontario (November 14, 2014) – Four Canadian sport clubs – the Killarney Swim Club, the Calgary Aquabelles Synchronized Swim Club, the Calgary Olympic Track Club (COTC), and the CALTAF Athletic Association -  are voicing their enthusiasm for recent Level 1 certification through the Club Excellence program.
“Many of the requirements were informally in place, and this process has given us impetus to formalize them and create an even stronger club for years to come,” said Paula McKenzie, Head Administrator for the CALTAF Athletic Association. “We worked together as a team and, through this process, created a clear cut vision of our future which has brought us closer together.”
Club Excellence is the only national multi-sport certification program for club level sport. It strives to build a network of healthy, strong and sustainable sport clubs and sport organizations across Canada. The Club Excellence Cooperative (CEC) was created in 2007 with common goals to identify a stable and supportive environment for coaches, improve implementation of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) at the community level, and ensure quality club programming built on the True Sport values of fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun. Based on 30 standards, the program recognizes clubs and associations that invest in building capacity to meet and exceed a basic set of operating principles.
The Killarney Swim Club represents the first swimming club to achieve Level 1 Certified status. Killarney’s Head Coach, Mike Meldrum, was thrilled about the achievement. “We believe that Club Excellence is the premiere vehicle to ensure sound governance is being practiced in clubs across Canada. Our experience as a club along the Level 1 pathway has made our club stronger as we pursue our goal of putting an athlete on the Canadian Olympic Team.”
The Calgary Aquabelles are the first synchronized swim club in Canada to be certified by the national program. They released a notice to their membership, conveying their excitement about the Club Excellence certification: http://aquabelles.com/.
For the Calgary Olympic Track Club (COTC), certification brings tangible returns. “We have been working diligently toward this achievement for the past year, because we strongly believe in the values and goals of the program,” said Chris Coy, Head Coach of the COTC. “Club Excellence ties in perfectly with the very high quality of governance, programming and coaching that COTC strives to maintain. We believe that focussing on excellence in every aspect of our operations, and at every level of athletic development, will produce great success for our athletes, not only in Athletics, but in all areas of their lives."
Less than two weeks ago, the Saint John Track Club became the first club in history to be certified under the Club Excellence program. “The Club Excellence standards provide an umbrella of quality to which all clubs in Canada can subscribe,” said a delighted Club Excellence Cooperative Chair, John Edwards. “As these standards cross all Canadian sports, they are THE Canadian standard of club quality!”
To date there have been 16 clubs, representing 8 different sports across 4 provinces, under review for Level 1 certification. The program continues to welcome clubs through the Affiliate status, which has quickly grown to represent 16 different sports, across 6 Canadian provinces.
For more information on the Club Excellence program and the new AFFILIATE status, please visitwww.clubexcellence.com or contact Kyle Johnston, at kjohnston@cces.ca or (613) 521-3340 x3226.
 About Club Excellence
The vision of Club Excellence is to establish a network of healthy, strong and sustainable sport clubs and sport organizations in Canada. At its core, it is the certification program that aims to increase the capacity of the sport delivery and management system in Canada that can deliver values-based and developmentally-appropriate programs for all athletes. The Level 1 Certification focuses on Sport Delivery and Sport Management. Program Delivery standards integrate the design and implementation of programs which foster the long term development of athletes consistent with guidelines detailed within sport’s LATD model and delivered in a manner consistent with the True Sport Principles. Coaching standards are focused on providing participants with access to coaches with the necessary tools to prepare for, initiate and execute effective programs for the development of participants and athletes. The standards place an emphasis on safety, ethical conduct and appropriate training and certification. Sport Management addresses organizational design, policies, management, and marketing. Clubs that have clear and consistent polices, stated values, and make deliberate decisions in line with their mission and move them toward their vision, will spend less time managing issues, and more time attracting/retaining volunteers and building/delivering programs. These clubs are transparent about their operations and financial management and put policies in place to ensure those responsible do not abuse their position.
Club Excellence Program provides incentives, support and guidelines for clubs in their everyday operations. The Club Excellence program encourages clubs to operate differently, plan ahead for challenges and serve their members more effectively.

TORONTO (July 24, 2014) – A very strong Canadian Pentathlon contingent, including three Olympians headed to Mexico City this past weekend and lead Canada to one of its strongest team performances at the Pan Am Championships held in Mexico City. This event was part of the Olympic Festival hosted through the summer in Mexico and represents a significant event in lead up to next years Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. 17 nations were in attendance at this competitive and collegial event.
Leading the notable performances for Canada was Melanie McCann (Mount Carmel, ON) who took home a silver medal in the Women’s Individual event very close behind London 2012 bronze medalist Yane Marques of Brazil. Melanie then teamed with Joshua Riker-Fox (Delacour, AB) in the Mixed Relay where they put together a thrilling GOLD medal victory.
Donna Vakalis (Toronto, ON) also demonstrated excellent form at the event finishing just out of the medals in fourth in the Women’s Individual event and then teamed with Mathea Stevens (Ottawa, ON) to win bronze in the Women’s Relay. Mathea finished the individual event in 12th position.

Canadian Pentathlon Athlete Nominated to Compete at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games

Kali Sayers
CALGARY (July 26, 2014) – Pentathlon Canada is proud to announce that Kali Sayers of Calgary, Alberta has been nominated to represent Canada at the 2014 Youth Olympics Games in Nanjing, China from August 16th – 28th. Kali Sayers will be competing in the Women’s Modern Pentathlon which will take place on August 22nd and 23rd.
All attending athletes in the Modern Pentathlon competition will also take part in a Mixed Relay on August 26th where they will be randomly partnered with athletes of the opposite gender from another country for that day of competition. This is in line with the strong cultural mandate of the Youth Olympic Games.
Kali Sayers, 18, will be Canada’s first representative to qualify to compete at the Summer Youth Olympic Games, the first of which took place in Singapore in 2010. Kali will be accompanied by coach Jane Rusconi.
Kali is a four time Canadian National Champion in her age group (18 and Under) as well as winning the US Youth Nationals in her age group twice previously. She has represented Canada twice at Youth World Championships. Working under a tight timeline, having sustaining an unfortunate ankle injury in May, Kali’s goal is to be within the top 10 at the upcoming competition.
Participating at the Youth Olympics has been a prioritized goal for Kali for the past year where she managed Canada-best performances in all three key qualification and ranking events to achieve selection – Youth Olympic Qualifier, Acapulco, Mexico in December 2013, International Youth Classic, Colorado Springs in April followed by Youth World Championships in May 2014.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to represent Canada on the international stage at the Youth Olympics. It is an honour to represent my country and to be the first pentathlete at the Youth Olympics for Canada. Of course, this wouldn’t have had a chance of happening if not for the help of many incredible people.”, says Sayers. “Nanjing here I come!”
Modern Pentathlon has been an Olympic sport since 1912 with women competing at the Olympic level for first time in Sydney in 2000. Pentathlon consists of five sports completed within four events – fencing, swimming, equestrian riding, and combined event (running and pistol shooting). At the youth level the equestrian component is not included internationally for safety reasons so athletes at the Youth Olympics will be contesting the fencing, swimming and combined event only. Pentathlon will be part of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games including Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Relay events.

PENTATHLON CANADA

Pentathlon Canada governs the sport of pentathlon in Canada, supporting our provincial associations and national team athletes in building a supportive environment for our sport. Pentathletes compete in five sports – fencing, swimming, equestrian riding, and a combined run and shoot – in a one-day competition.

ALBERTA’S EMILY WAGNER QUALIFIES FOR 2014 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

Congratulations to Emily Wagner of Calgary who has qualified to represent Canada in Triathlon at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in August 2014. Wagner secured a spot on the team by finishing third in the Pan American triathlon qualification event held on the 2nd May 2014 in Monterrey, Mexico.
Sixteen year-old Wagner entered her first triathlon race in June 2013 in Calgary and rapidly established herself as one of the top junior triathletes in the country by winning the Canada Summer Games triathlon competition in August 2013. In her first race of 2014, she performed strongly against competitors from all over the America's to secure her first podium result in an international competition.
"I'm very excited and proud to have qualified to represent Canada at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing", said Wagner.
"This was my first international race and although I'm pleased with the outcome, there are still areas I know I can improve on and I'm excited to start working on them. I appreciate all the people and organizations that have supported me and helped me reach this goal."
The Canadian Sport Institute Calgary has supported Wagner's development by providing sport science and sport medicine support to her through its Athlete Development Project.
"The Athlete Development Project was set up to identify talented young athletes like Emily so that we can guide their long term development", said Paula Jardine the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary Talent Development Manager. "By providing expert sport science support now when her body is still maturing and highly malleable we are building a solid platform for performance that will enhance her potential for sustained success in future Olympic Games."
